Dentures & Partials Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are a removable set of artificial teeth. These prosthetic teeth are typically made from porcelain or composite resin, and they’re attached to an acrylic base that’s shaded to match the particular color of your natural gums.

There have been a number of technological innovations in recent years that have made dentures more comfortable and natural-looking than in the past. Today’s dentures give you a beautiful new smile that feels great in your mouth.

Are there different types of dentures?

There are a few types of dentures, each of which has different advantages for your particular needs and preferences:

Traditional full dentures

Traditional full dentures replace all of the teeth in your smile, so they’re used when you don’t have any natural teeth remaining or are planning on extracting your remaining teeth. They fit over your gums and stay in place with either suction or adhesive.

Partial dentures

If your smile still has some healthy teeth left, partial dentures can replace the gaps without affecting your natural teeth. The base of your partial dentures is custom-built to have openings for your natural teeth, so your natural teeth and your artificial teeth can work side-by-side in harmony.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures connect to your mouth with dental implants. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically embedded into your jawbone. Implant-supported dentures have a variety of advantages, including increased comfort and stability and providing your jawbone with healthy stimulation that prevents bone loss.

Immediate dentures

If you’re getting extractions to make room for full dentures, immediate dentures can enable you to replace your teeth immediately after your extractions. With traditional dentures, you have to wait for your jaw to heal from the extraction surgery before you can take impressions of your mouth needed to make your dentures.

With immediate dentures, your Zadeh Dental provider takes your molds before your extractions so that your dentures are ready on the same day your remaining teeth are removed. Immediate dentures require more adjustments and relinings, since your jaw naturally shrinks and changes shape after extractions, but they allow you to avoid having to go without teeth during that process.

Are dentures comfortable?

Your mouth is designed to function with teeth in it, so dentures ultimately make your mouth feel better and work more effectively than it does without teeth. Before you get to that point, however, the muscles of your mouth need to figure out how to work with the new dentures.

During your adjustment period, your dentures might make your gums a little sore. They also might feel loose or bulky, and you might notice an increased flow of saliva. These are all expected sensations that will eventually go away. Once your mouth adjusts, your dentures will feel great and make it easier for you to properly eat and speak.
